Low-Glycemic Foods Gaining the Attention of Dieters |
|
(As reported in USA today 5-04-05)
The Glycemic Index measures how fast a carbohydrate is digested and raises blood-sugar levels.
High-glycemic carbs, such as refined flours, are quickly digested which is not good. Low-glycemic carbs, such as whole grains, are digested more slowly. Low glycemic food products have the attention of dieters.
The detailed Glycemic Index has better science behind it than most low-carb diets, says Grant Ferrier, editor of Nutrition Business Journal
Healthy and Sweet, the all natural sweetener marketed by Health Rewards International has a near 0 glycemic index rating since each serving does not elevate blood sugar. |
| Lifestyle Gourmet Testimonial |
Steve, I've never counted calories in my life, and I'm not now, and I never will, and I did *not* get on LifeStyle Gourmet to lose weight, because I have *never* tried to lose weight thru nutrition and I've always done it thru exercise alone in the past. The truth before God Almighty is that I have *never* been on a diet a single day in my life. The very concept is foreign to my personality (depriving myself of anything--at least depriving myself of any GOOD thing). That's why, at two different times in my adult life, I've temporarily ballooned to as much as 250 pounds. I've always eaten GOOD food (never ANY junk), but I've always eaten too much of it, apparently. And the fact is, I haven't changed my exercise routine in the least, and am not exercising any more than I did before, but I have lost (at last count) 16 1/2 pounds from 190 to 173 1/2. Since February 1st the day I got on LifeStyle Gourmet.
And I haven't weighed in the 170s since I was a teenager. No matter what I've eaten in the past and no matter how I've exercised in the past, in my post-teenager life, the lowest weight I've been able to get down to is 190 pounds. That happened during a six-month vacation during 1999 when I was 36 years old and most recently from November 2004 thru January 31st 2005 when I got down to 190 *again* and got "stuck" there until LifeStyle Gourmet has catapulted me into this stunning "additional fat loss" breakthrough!
How and why this has happened, I do not know. But I do know that it has happened. And I know that's it's directly because of LifeStyle Gourmet because that is the *only* thing that has changed in the last 9+ weeks. The introduction of LifeStyle Gourmet into my eating and this stunning weight loss of the *hardest fat pounds to lose* (the last ones) is simply astounding even to me. And so it has been a very pleasant surprise for me. I got on the product due to the taste and the quality of the food and the convenience of f-a-s-t high quality food preparation. Losing weight was the furthest thing from my mind when I got on LifeStyle Gourmet. It just started happening and I certainly couldn't ignore it (nor could others). That's why I didn't even start talking about losing weight associated with LifeStyle Gourmet until several weeks after taking the product because it wasn't my original intention or focus or even NOTION...I didn't start talking about it until I noticed I was disappearing in the mirror in front of me.
On CNN.com there was recently a link to a study that said that there was something "magical" about low carb eating where the actual weight loss is greater than what one would expect thru mere calorie counting. A "synergism" if you will that almost leads one to believe in "alchemy."
Seems to be happening to me, my friend. And don't take my word for it. Just get in contact with Mike Martin, Johnny the Greek or anybody from da Chicago group. I'm literally disappearing before their very eyes. My goal is to get into the low 160s. At that weight I don't think there'd hardly be an ounce of fat on me. :)

Is there a threat of a pandemic? Do you know what a pandemic is? Should you care?
A pandemic is a illness generally caused a virus that spread very rapidly from human to human with a very high death rate. Why this occurs will be left to those who feel their purpose is to debate such questions.
History has numerous examples of pandemics. So since history repeats itself, it is prudent to conclude a pandemic will occur again. When - who knows?
Recent activity in Asia has some convinced the next pandemic is near. Well whether it is or not, one thing is clear. The entire population does not die from a pandemic and even more importantly, not everyone in the pandemic attack zone die. Why? Because some people's immune system can withstand a vicious attack - even without a vaccine.
Whether it is the threat of a pandemic, the flu, a cold or anything else, it is prudent to focus on strengthening you immune system. |

| Snacks - Most Are Unhealthy and What a Waste of Energy
|
|
As reported this week on the front page of MSN, the most unhealthy snacks include french fries, potato chips and a lot more items including some very popular drinks. Food that has little or no nutritional value adds weight, impairs your cardiovascular and digestive systems and has a major adverse affect on blood sugar regulation.
Eating takes energy. Energy for chewing is obvious but what about this list of energy consuming activities: digestion and elimination, travel to and from the store as well as shipping, the production of the food product and the growing and or production of the ingredients. This is actually a shortened list. So all of that energy for products that are damaging to your health.
The alternative - use energy on what is good for you. Everyone benefits.

Eat More...Often and Lose Weight |
|
Recent headlines conveniently omitted the "Often" in the above headlines. The point is that eating the right foods at more frequent intervals has merit. The following are the important highlights from the article released on a major internet portal website's front page.
If you have a piece of fruit or a serving of vegetables every 2 to 3 hours, you'll maximize your body's disease-fighting ability--and you may even lose a pound a week without noticing. That's because phytonutrients--the health-promoting, disease-preventing substances abundant in plant foods--need to be replenished in your system often to keep their potency high.
Strive for 4 servings of vegetables and 3 servings of fruit daily, but remember, more is better.
A produce-packed diet also arms your body against heart disease, diabetes, and possibly some cancers, and may keep your bones strong by helping them retain calcium.
Prevention recommends that you get three to four servings of whole grains a day--up from the American average of one--to boost your energy and heart health, possibly prevent cancer, and stay full longer so you don't overeat.
Whole grains may also be slimming--especially if you up your intake of fiber to at least the recommended 25 to 35 g a day. According to Tufts University researchers, weight loss potential is higher in people who eat whole rather than refined grains, probably because high-fiber foods keep you feeling full longer.
There are other benefits as well: "Dietary fiber accounts for 80 percent of the heart protection you get from whole grains," says James Anderson, MD, a professor of medicine and clinical nutrition at the University of Kentucky, adding that fiber is emerging as both a preventive and a treatment for diseases such as diabetes and obesity.

Industry responds strongly to negative vitamin E study |
Unless you have been hibernating for the past several weeks, you already know that the Annals of Internal Medicine has published a scathing Johns Hopkins School of Medicine study suggesting that daily vitamin E doses of 400 International Units (IU) or more can increase the risk of death and should be avoided. The research in question consisted of a meta-analysis, a reexamination of the raw data from 19 earlier studies, which were conducted between 1993 and 2004.
Lurid headlinessuggesting that use of vitamin E could be deadlyfollowed an advance release of the findings in November. Members of the natural products industry, astounded by what they considered incorrect science and stung by what they were convinced was unjust reporting, mobilized a mountain of rebuttals.
Then, about two weeks after the initial negative reports surfaced, another studyconducted at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, indicated that about 40% of diabetic patients can reduce their risk of heart attacks and of dying from heart disease by taking vitamin E supplements. This positive studyunfortunately, but predictablyreceived far less attention from mainstream media outlets.
Meanwhile, a quick national poll released early in December revealed that as many as 18% of Americans are less likely to take vitamin E based on the Johns Hopkins meta-analysis. In this case, at least so far, bad news is overpowering good news.
Nevertheless, the industry is putting up a good fight. Within days of the initial releasewhich occurred simultaneously online and at a meeting of the American Heart Associationthe Newport Beach, CA-based National Nutritional Foods Association (NNFA) and the Sarasota, FL-based Dietary Supplement Education Alliance (DSEA) had both set up vitamin E resource centers at which members of the industry and the consumer public could go online to obtain information that supports the benefits of vitamin E and thoroughly refutes the studys negative findings. The NNFA center is on its website, www.nnfa.org, and the DSEA center is accessible at www.vitaminefacts.org.
In addition, the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), located in Washington, DC, launched a national campaign to reassure the public of the safety and benefits of vitamin E, as well as to point out flaws in the Johns Hopkins study. The initial phase of CRNs campaign included a national advertising effort with a full-page ad in the November 29 editions of The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times and USA Today. The ad featured quotes from prominent health researchers debunking the negative claims of the recent meta-analysis and noting the many benefits of vitamin E. The ad further focused on the fact that the Institute of Medicine, a scientific advisory body, reviewed 340 peer-reviewed scientific studies and references on vitamin E, including most of the studies covered in the meta-analysis, and concluded that vitamin E is safe at levels as high as 1,000 mg per day (1,500 IU for natural vitamin E, or 1,000 IU of synthetic vitamin E).
Among the criticisms being leveled at the work of the Johns Hopkins researchers by both scientists and industry is the argument that most of the studies included in the meta-analysis were done on elderly people already suffering from chronic disease and therefore of no relevance to healthy populations. Others have pointed out that most of the studies were done on supplements of single-source vitamin E, usually alpha-tocopherol, not taking into account the fact that vitamin E is made up of eight elementsfour tocopherols and four tocotrienols.
Following is a sampling of some of the comments dealing with the vitamin E situation:
This study, released at the American Heart Association annual meeting, produced and created an avalanche of misinformation that puts millions of Americans at a health risk, said Elliott Balbert, president of the Dietary Supplement Education Alliance. Numerous scientific studies have shown that Americans, especially seniors, should take vitamin E supplements to combat cardiovascular disease.
This is armchair science at its worst, said David Seckman, NNFAs executive director and CEO. Researchers are well aware that casting doubt on any product that has had overwhelmingly positive findings is a formula for getting noticed. Unfortunately, many in the press are all too willing to lend credence to research that is not conclusive.
This is an unfortunate misdirection of science in an attempt to make something out of nothing for the sake of headlines, commented John Hathcock, Ph.D., vice president, scientific and international affairs, CRN.
Vitamin E is such an important antioxidant, said Barbara Levine, Ph.D., director of the Nutrition Information Center and associate professor of nutrition in medicine, Weill Medical College of Cornell University. If consumers base their lifestyles on this inconclusive meta-analysis, we could see an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, cancers and age-related macular degeneration in an otherwise healthy population.
Do not throw away your vitamin E, said C. Wayne Callaway, M.D., a specialist in internal medicine, endocrinology, metabolism and clinical nutrition. One study does not outweigh the many studies that document the benefits of vitamin E in people who need it and the lack of harm in people who do not.
Studies that are able to obtain this type of high media attention do have a significant impact on sales. For example, positive studies in the mid 1990s had significant positive effect on vitamin E sales, noted Thomas Breisach, spokesperson for Parsippany, NJ-based DSM Nutritional Products, one of the largest manufacturers of the vitamin. According to feedback from some customers, there is a short-term drop in vitamin E business in the week since the story ran.
Carotechs W.H. Leong agreed that meta-analyses are often highly speculative because of the different variables in each study, the latest of which could additionally highlight the problems with taking a single form of vitamin E. We should be taking the whole spectrum of vitamin E, the mix of tocopherols and tocotrienols, in the way they are produced and found in nature, he told NutraIngredients.com, an online news service. Mimicking nature is the best way for supplementation. Like the carotenoids, all these different forms of vitamin E work synergistically and depend on each other for optimum functionality, he added.
Aileen Burford-Mason, Ph.D., a Toronto, Canada-based immunologist and nutritional consultant, stated, The problem with the study on vitamin E is that it is simply not good science. A good meta-analysis is a useful tool. It can help put apparently contradictory studies into perspective, and allow doctors to provide their patients with an overview of the effectiveness or ineffectiveness of treatments. But a major problem with this approach is that a good meta-analysis of badly designed studies still results in bad statistics. Statisticians have a saying for this: Garbage in equals garbage out. In the case of this study, the garbage involved failure to make sure that all the clinical trials analyzed in the same meta-analysis used the same form of vitamin E.
A side issue surfaced when doctors associated with SELECT, a North American trial involving 35,000 men looking at whether vitamin E and selenium can prevent prostate cancer, had to scramble to reassure study participants that they could safely continue the regimen. At the Medical College of Wisconsin, one of 400 sites taking part in the trial, more than 60 men called the day after the Johns Hopkins findings hit the press, wondering if they should drop out. Heather Engelke, research coordinator, said, Were in quite a bind. Ive got 154 guys in the study. I hope all my guys dont back out. Ill do my best to keep them in.
In clinical science, they teach us to look at the totality of the evidence as specific studies may contradict each other, said Andreas Papas, M.D., president of Yasoo Health, located in Johnson City, TN. There have been 2,170 articles on vitamin E of which they chose only 19. The patients in those 19 trials had significant medical problems including heart disease, end-stage renal disease and Parkinsons among others. They even excluded studies in which fewer than 10 people died. In the end they found no harm from vitamin E, but when they looked at the higher doses (using the sickest patients) they saw what might be a connection with increased harm when only using alpha-tocopherol, and in the majority of the studies they used the synthetic version.
Neil E. Levin, CCN, DANLA, speaking on behalf of NOW Foods, in Bloomingdale, IL, said, taking only one antioxidant may seem to deplete others because of the way they interact, with one antioxidant chemically supporting others. A surplus of one nutrient may increase a persons need for one or more other nutrients, creating an apparent functional deficiency. There is a recent example that illustrates my point. Some years ago an antioxidant study in Finland was halted early, with a widely reported increase in cancer rates among male smokers taking beta-carotene. Headlines associated vitamins with cancer risk. Despite objections that the study was flawed, vitamin use dropped. Fast-forward to this year. A new analysis published in July takes another look at that same Finnish smokers study, but now takes into account their total antioxidant intake, and clears up the whole controversy. Their risk of getting lung cancer was closely associated with total antioxidants in the diet, with more antioxidants meaning less cancer. A composite antioxidant index was generated for each of the 27,000 men over 14 years. The calculated amounts of carotenoids, flavonoids, vitamin E, selenium and vitamin C were compared to actual lung cancer rates, with a clear result: a combination of antioxidants lowers lung cancer risk in male smokers. What does this all mean? I think we are in for another round of attacks on vitamins based on this crude analysis of vitamin E, with some medical experts calling for restrictions on vitamin potency. That would be a mistake, both scientifically and from a public health viewpoint. The message should be that people should not try to take a high dose of one supplement without considering that it may increase our need for other nutrients.
When asked if consumers should continue taking vitamin E, Dr. Maret Traber, a vitamin E expert at the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University, stated, Absolutely yes. |

Put less food in your mouth. |
| As Seen On MSN: "Is Your Job Making You Fat?" |
|
The respected editor who authored the above headline and related article was well intended. Her advice was practical. Basically, avoid fatty foods and exercise.
The following is a twist on that advice:
-
Put less calories in your mouth.
-
Eat what your body needs not what your eyes and mouth tell you they want.
-
Whenever possible - move. Lately I have been in a working situation that has made my normal exercise routine very difficult. I have not been able to get to the gym as frequently and I am not able to bike, skate or play hockey like I used to. This place where I am working happens to sit on a large piece of property. So I have most calls come into my cell phone and when I am on the phone I walk. I walk all over the damn place because I get a lot of calls. Results - my weight is down.)
-
Use supplements - a lot of them. Of course I use Cardio Life daily. I also use: Berry Young Juice, Power Meal, Immune Tone, Longevity and about 6 different essential oils. Cardio Life can be found at http://www.healthrewardsinternational.com The other products can be found at www.essentialoils.to

| A Balance of Omega-3 and Omega-6 Acids Is Vital |
|
According to the American Cancer Society, omega-3 acids and omega-6 acids work well because they counterbalance each other as important nutrients involved in many human biological processes. Since most people eat an overabundance of omega 3 fatty acids, a fish oil supplement is recommended for this balance.
For a great source of Omega 6 supplements, we recommend Omegacin+ Click Here for more information

How Stress Makes You Fat
And how to beat it |
|
By: David Zinczenko, Editor-in-Chief of Men's Health and Ted Spiker, Co-authors of The Abs Diet
One of the great side benefits of a good diet and workout plan is that it helps you take control of your life, which means taking control of your stress level. I can't emphasize strongly enough how important stress management is for your weight, for your health, and for the quality of life you'll lead.
That's because our bodies simply aren't designed to handle the stress of modern life. See, when stress hits, one of the first things your body does is jack up its production of adrenaline. Adrenaline causes fat cells all over your body to squirt their stores of fatty acids into your bloodstream to be used as energy. This was great back when stress meant a charging saber-toothed tiger or an attacking horde of barbarians and your fight-or-flight mechanism switched on. But it's not so great in today's society, where the only tigers and barbarians you have to handle are the ones who sign your paycheck. You don't flee or fight; you just bear down to get that report finished and munch your way through a midnight deadline. Meanwhile, your adrenal glands are producing yet another hormone to handle all that freshly released fat. It's called cortisol, but I want you to call it by its nickname: the belly-fat hormone.
In one Yale study, researchers asked 42 overweight people to perform an hour of stressful tasks-math problems, puzzles, and speech making. All the while, their cortisol levels were measured. The subjects who carried their extra weight in their bellies were discovered to be secreting more cortisol while under pressure. The theory runs like this: Stress hits, adrenaline mobilizes fat from all over the body, and cortisol takes the unused portion and stashes it with extreme prejudice toward the abdominal region. In a study of 438 male firefighters, the ones who said they worried about their financial security gained 11.2 pounds over 7 years, compared with an average of 7.4 pounds gained by non-worriers. The key to managing your midsection, then, is managing your stress. Here are a few proven ways to keep your head-and your abs-when all around you are losing theirs.
Skip Letterman.
A University of Chicago study published in the journal Sleep showed that men who slept only 4 hours had cortisol levels 37 percent higher than men who got a full 8 hours of shut-eye; the men who stayed awake the whole night had levels 45 percent higher. Sleep specialists suggest that you strive for 8 hours per night.
Stop tossing and turning.
How well you sleep matters, too. Another University of Chicago study showed that men who got plenty of deep sleep-the quality stuff without all the dreaming and rapid eye movement-secreted almost 65 percent more human growth hormone (HGH) than men who were short on good slumber. You want more HGH to help prevent the loss of muscle mass caused by cortisol.
Remember C, as in "crisis."
If you're in a stressful time of life-wondering why the jury has been out so long, perhaps-load up on vitamin C. For managing stress, you probably top out the benefit with a daily intake of 1,000 milligrams, divided into small doses throughout the day.
Don't have that last drink.
Booze dehydrates you. Your body thinks there's a water shortage emergency, which bumps up your cortisol. How much alcohol is too much? Most of the smart money says three drinks a day. Same dehydration idea applies to caffeine. For cortisol control, stick to 200 milligrams per day, about what you get in two cups of coffee.
Take the wheel.
A sense of control over some of the stressors in your life helps. "If you blast a volunteer randomly with a noise, his stress hormones rise," says Robert Sapolsky, Ph.D., professor of biological and neurological sciences at Stanford University. "But if you give him a button and tell him that pressing it will decrease the likelihood of the noise, there's a smaller stress response to the same sound." Getting organized, even in small ways, may help you feel more like the captain of your ship.
Make a plan.
"People manage stress more effectively if they can believe that things are improving," says Sapolsky. So make sure you always have something you're looking forward to. Hope makes stress manageable.
Get spiritual.
Remember the simple wisdom of Simone Weil: Any undivided attention is prayer. If we can stop the tumble in our heads and every day briefly commit our complete attention to something-a 10-foot putt, a 10-penny nail, or a 10-year-old child-we may acquire the serenity many find in formal faith.
